Layered Sand

Every day he’d count the sand,

layer upon layer.

The silent beach was his alone,

layer upon layer.

A small old man who knew each grain,

layer upon layer.

He swore that it would never change,

layer upon layer.

Until one day the sands did shift,

layer upon layer.

And a single grain he then did miss.
